Some landscapes seem to offer themselves all at once. Others ask a little more of us. They reveal themselves gradually, in layers of colour, light and distance, as though what matters most cannot be hurried.
That feeling stayed with me while painting this piece. The bright heather in the foreground draws you in first, full of warmth and vitality, while beyond it the estuary opens more quietly, unfolding into soft light and far hills. There is a sense here of something both immediate and withheld, a reminder that not everything beautiful arrives at once.
For me, that is part of what makes a landscape so compelling. It invites us to look longer, to be patient, and to notice how much is revealed when we are willing to meet it with attention.
