This painting was made 'en plein air' on a bright morning, after a dawn start with a painter friend to catch that early light. There is something deeply rewarding about being out at that hour, when the air feels sharp and clean, and the landscape is only just beginning to wake.

Those early hours often hold a particular clarity. The light is fresh, the colours feel newly revealed, and even familiar places seem quietly transformed. Painting outdoors in that moment asks for presence and quick decisions, but it also brings a wonderful sense of freedom.

This piece became one of a pair, and sits alongside Out Before Breakfast, both shaped by the same morning and the same shared experience of standing in the landscape, brushes in hand, before most of the day had begun.
Out early, oil on canvas board, 18 x 24 cm
This painting is currently showing in 'The Second Collection' group exhibition, and is available for sale from Beecher's Gallery.
