The idea for this painting grew from a simple winter view of rolling hills because I was captivated by the feeling of the snow-capped mountains resting quietly in the distance.
There is something deeply moving about a landscape like this. The space, the stillness, the sense that what lies far away can sometimes be felt more clearly precisely because it is not close at hand.
The title refers to that feeling of holding a fond distance from someone, or something, in order to appreciate it more fully. It is about perspective, tenderness, and the quiet understanding that not everything precious needs to be held tightly to be loved.
Painted in oil on canvas, this small work has smooth softly blended areas in combination with other areas that have lots of texture. I hope it conveys the hush of winter light and the softness of land disappearing into atmosphere; an invitation to pause, take a breath and a moment of reflection.
Keeping fond distance, oil on canvas, 23 x 30 cm
This painting is currently showing in 'The Second Collection' group exhibition, and is available for sale from Beecher's Gallery.
