This year is the 100th year of the shipping forecast and to mark the occasion the BBC have made a series of programmes about how the shipping forecast affects the lives of people around the country. To mark the centenary of broadcasting of the
Shipping Forecast, members of the Radio 4 Continuity team, the voices of the on-air forecast, leave the Radio 4 studio behind and travel the UK visiting some of the iconic areas we may only know by their official descriptions on the daily forecast: Lundy, Dogger, Forth, Irish Sea, Wight.
They meet the residents, sailors, fishermen, radio lovers and many others who live and work on the coastal areas - and who have a connection to the Shipping Forecast. I was so pleased to be included in these 'shipping postcards' broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on New Years Day 2025! If you missed it you can still listen online, my short segment is on episode 2.
You can listen to the episode HERE on BBC sounds
The episodes starts with none other than actor Ruth Jones (famous for her role in the sitcom Gavin & Stacey). 'Nessa' even makes an appearance reading the shipping forecast in her own inimitable style; "What's occurrin'? ..I'm not gonna lie it's not lookin' too good."
There are also snippets from the lifeboat station, from the cathedral and of course from my studio! It's a lovely cross section of people form all walks of life who all have something to say about their connection to the shipping forecast and what it means to them. It's a gentle, interesting and easy listen. Enjoy! x
