Painting insights: Alive and kicking

Painting insights: Alive and kicking

'Alive and kicking' is an energetic depiction of a wave crashing against the rocks. The colours are very typical of the Pembrokeshire coastline with different types of algae and lichen creating bands of orange, green and black on the rocks.

The coastline here is covered with colourful lichens that grow on the rocks above the waterline. They form in bands according to their respective salt tolerance and so appear as distinctive horizontal stripes of black, orange and pale green. In sheltered places they are highly banded in more exposed places, where the sea batters the coast, the colours are more scattered.

Alive and kicking, oil on canvas, 60 x 60 cm
