This newly edited time-lapse video shows me using ‘en plein air’ location studies and sketches to inform a finished oil painting later in the studio. The studies were done on a stormy January day in low light which produced moody purple tones.
Later I decided to revisit these studies in the studio and starting with a loose tonal block in on canvas, the painting evolved over a couple of sessions. As I gradually add in colour the feel of the painting starts to emerge and although I am not ‘copying’ the original studies I am referring to them as an ‘aid’ to my memory of that day.
As the painting progresses, the colours, textures and details become more refined, but the end result still appears loose and expressive.
