Painting process: Glazing

Painting process: Glazing

I use glazing often in my work. At its simplest, this is the application of transparent paint over another layer.

These can be used alone to moderate an existing colour, or built up in many layers to create optical depth and complexity. One reason why these paintings always look better in the flesh! A clear medium can be added to increase transparency.

If you would like to read more about the glazing process, then turn to ‘Glazing for glowing skies’, a full-length feature I produced full of tips and techniques for Paint & Draw Oils Magazine.
