I left my studio last week and went ‘plein air’ painting in Sussex. I stayed with my friend Frances who is also an artist. We went out every morning at about 6am to paint outdoors in the early morning light then we worked in her amazing studio during the day and even went out again one evening to the River Arun and painted in the changing evening light watched by a curious herd of cows!
Frances has a large light studio in Arundel that I’m very envious of! We were both able to work there from our ‘plein air’ studies during the day when the light/weather was not so good.
We did brave the wind and rain one morning though to paint on the beach at Climping. It was eventful; my palette blew off my easel and onto me, so I was literally wearing more paint than I had on the canvas! Frances had the better idea to sit down behind a groyne and face AWAY from the wind!
It was both refreshing and challenging to have a change of scenery. It was also productive; by the end of the week I had 10 painted studies (and some sketches) from 4 separate locations.
